New advice for a cavity-free smile: here's how to keep your child's teeth healthy!
At Veemarkt Dental Practice, we always work with the most up-to-date knowledge to take the best care of your teeth - and those of your children. That is why we are happy to share the new, tightened advice on caries prevention (preventing cavities) that the Ivory Cross recently launched.
This new advice emphasizes starting early and consistent prevention in the first years of life. This is good news because by connecting the dots together, we will keep the teeth of our youngest patients healthy for as long as possible!
What has changed in the opinion?
The main tightening concerns children's daily routines:
Brush more often, brush longer: Start brushing from the very first tooth, twice a day. The recommendation for after-brushing has been extended: Do it now through age 12 (the entire elementary school period).
Rest time is crucial: Give the teeth sufficient recovery time. A minimum of two hours of rest between eating and drinking occasions (except water) is now advised.
Number of eating and drinking moments: The maximum number of moments has been clarified: a maximum of 5 per day for children up to and including 4 years of age, and a maximum of 7 per day for children over 5 years of age.
Dental visits: Come in for a check-up from the breakthrough of the first tooth (this is in line with the recent guideline from the Youth Health Department!).
Toothpaste use: There are now specific recommendations for the amount of fluoride toothpaste based on age, in order to best protect against cavities.
This advice will help you provide optimal support for your child's oral health at home. We are happy to help you with personalized tips on brushing, nutrition and toothpaste use during your next appointment. Do you have previous questions? If so, please feel free to contact us. Together we will ensure a beautiful, cavity-free smile!
