Tooth out? Tooth in!

What to do if a tooth falls out?

An accident is in a small corner: during sports, play or a clumsy fall. What to do if a tooth falls out? On yourself or on your child? Stay calm! Quick and proper action can be critical to preserving the tooth.

At Veemarkt Dental Practice, we want to help you be well prepared. Remember the main rule: Tooth out? Tooth in!

Follow these 3 crucial steps when a tooth falls out:

1) Rinse the tooth briefly:

  • Grasp the tooth only at the top (the crown portion).
  • NEVER touch the root.
  • Rinse the tooth under cold running water for up to 10 seconds.

2) Replace the tooth immediately:

  • Place the fallen tooth directly back into the maxillary sinus. This significantly increases the chances of preserving the tooth!
  • Does not succeed in reinsertion? Then keep the tooth in milk or in the patient's mouth (in the hollow of the cheek) and make sure it is not swallowed.

3) Go directly to the dentist or emergency room:

Note: NEVER replace a MELLOW tooth!

With a baby tooth, reinsertion is not the way to go because it can damage the underlying, permanent tooth. Do always visit the dentist promptly for check-ups. Contact us for an appointment.

In our practice, we will professionally reposition and splint the tooth. Usually, the tooth then grows back into place. We carefully monitor the following weeks to see if further treatment is needed.

Why keep a tooth that has fallen out in (semi-skimmed) milk?

The enzymes and pH of milk help keep root membrane cells vital longer.
