You probably hear and read it everywhere: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making its appearance in almost every field. Even in dentistry, there are plenty of developments. But what does this really mean for you as a patient?
At Veemarkt Dental Practice, we closely follow the latest innovations. We find it important to take you along with us in this, with a realistic view. Our professional association, the KNMT (Royal Dutch Dental Association), recently aptly summarized the current state of affairs: there is "a lot of enthusiasm, but no revolution yet."
We fully concur with this.
The enthusiasm: What does AI promise?
Most attention is currently focused on AI software that can help us with diagnostics. Think about analyzing X-rays.
A smart algorithm, after training with thousands of examples, can provide a "second pair of eyes. It can help alert the dentist to minute changes, such as very incipient cavities (caries) or subtle signs of bone loss in the gums. The goal is to spot problems even earlier and further increase the accuracy of diagnosis.
The reality: Why no revolution (yet)?
The KNMT rightly emphasizes that AI is a tool, not a replacement for the dentist. And that is a crucial distinction.
A computer can identify a speck in a photograph, but it does not understand the context. It performs a specific task. Your dentist does much more:
- The human context: We don't just look at a picture, we look at you. We know your history, discuss your wishes, and take into account your overall (oral) health.
- Clinical experience: The dentist combines what he sees with years of experience, sense of touch (feeling) and broad medical knowledge.
- The treatment plan: AI does not establish a treatment plan. The consideration of what is the best step - waiting, preventive intervention or treatment - remains a human decision that we make with you.
