As your dental practice, we would like to inform you about relevant developments in the Dutch health care system. Health insurer Menzis recently announced a new initiative regarding the mandatory deductible for a specific group of insured persons.
What does Menzis' plan entail?
Starting January 1, Menzis will introduce a new scheme in certain regions (including Groningen, Twente, Achterhoek and Arnhem).
In cooperation with municipalities, insured persons are identified who are known to be financially vulnerable (e.g., people who already use minimum schemes). This selected group is offered a supplementary policy. Through this policy, costs covered by the mandatory deductible are reimbursed. No higher premium has to be paid for this supplementary policy.
Background to the initiative
The mandatory deductible is a regular topic of discussion. It is a well-known fact that the cost of the deductible can be a barrier for some people to seek timely care. This is also known as "care avoidance.
According to Menzis, their plan is meant to be "customized. Instead of lowering the deductible for all insured persons (which would increase the basic premium for everyone), the insurer chooses to help the group known to potentially avoid care because of costs.
Current status
For now, Menzis' plan is a regional initiative. The health insurer hopes that other insurers will eventually join the plan so that it can be implemented nationwide through municipalities.
It shows that consideration is being given within the healthcare industry to the impact of the deductible on access to care. At Veemarkt Dental Practice, we are keeping an eye on these developments for you.
